ABOUT "DARKNESS"

I wrote this song in memory of my friend and musical comrade, Steve Tambone, and it's about my struggle to heal after he passed away.

Steve was an extremely gifted multi-instrumentalist with an incredible sense of humor and quick wit. He was one of the best drummers I've ever had the pleasure to work with, and a dear friend who always made me laugh. He left the earth all too soon at the age of 26.

When he died, I felt an enormous sense of grief that up until that point I had not experienced. I ached to hear his voice and to play songs with him again. The sadness overwhelmed me to the point of self-pity; I felt guilty that I got to go on enjoying life and making music, all while a person as special as Steve was stopped short during his early adulthood with so much more to give. I was depressed because I felt guilty, too, but I am now able to recognize that feeling of guilt is a valid emotion to experience during the grieving process.

How to cope in healthy ways doesn't always come naturally, and I find it's something I need to work at in order to achieve peace. I feel fortunate to be able to write music and lyrics; it's an outlet that helps me immensely, but I feel the most thankful for having a great support system of friends and family.

lyrics

Run through same old maze every time I close my eyes
Everytime I think I found a way out, the road ahead of me divides
Winter| calls my name, storms cloud up my mind
When I finally wake from the dream, still feels like I’m trapped under ice

My best days feel like a past life now
Better let them go before they drag me down
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in

I’m trying to make some sense of our broken plan
I’ll be around if you want me, and if you don’t I’ll understand
The world around is changing, I just wanna keep it the same
As I struggle with the grief, as I stumble through the blame

My best days feel like a past life now
Better let them go before they drag me down
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in

My heart’s been burning out ever since I lost my friend
When I've finished walking through my days I hope I find him at the end
I wanna see his face again before I open my eyes
Help me take away the pain, guide me toward the still of the night
Guide me toward the still of the night

My best days feel like a past life now
Better let them go before they drag me down
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into someone you can’t believe in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
Into darkness I don’t wanna be in
